Match preview: Leyton Orient vs Brentford 'B'.

It's back to Greater London WFL premiership action this Sunday 27th October 2024 with a match against long-time adversaries Brentford 'B'. These two clubs fought out a neck-and-neck season in 2022/23 where an evening kick-off at Brentford, during the final few days of the season, saw Jordan Feldman collect a through-ball, beat her marker and thump a low shot in the left corner to end all doubts that the O's would both take the title and end the season undefeated.

Brentford were always right on our heels and, true to form, they completed their own promotion the following season so now we face each other again, this time in the GLWFL premier division.
Brentford have found life in the premier quite tough going this season, they're currently sitting in 8th position and have returned a set of performance figures as follows:-
Played 6, Won 1, Drawn 1, Lost 4, GD -15, Points 4.
They beat bottom club Camden & Islington Utd and earned a creditable point against Islington Borough (who were top at the time) with a 1:1 draw. Otherwise, a 2:0 defeat to South London, a 7:0 thumping at Tooting Bec and a disappointing 7:2 loss to Luton Town shows a degree of inconsistency. Four goals from Chelsea Berry and two from Holly Hawkes (pic) are their only goal scorers with two or more goals this season.

The lofcwomen.com prediction is for a comfortable home win on Sunday as long as everyone puts in the kind of effort and performance we saw at Welling Utd last week. If we fall short of that, the Bee's are more than capable of keeping us pointless next to the foot of the table.

Defence coaching and application.

At last Sunday's 3:0 away win at Welling Utd in the Intermediate Cup, Larry P scraped a few minutes together to shoot a couple of videos. Here are some still photos taken from that footage which we think shows off the coaching and know-how displayed by a couple of our defenders....

Grace Alexander (grey) battling away at Welling Utd

A Welling player (in red) is leading a fast breakaway, right to left, and is approaching O's skipper Grace Alexander (grey strip, red boots). Grace positions herself to the inside leaving the Welling player little option but to go left. Grace is also half-turned in readiness to counter the run of the forward and doesn't want to have to turn before making that challenge.

The Welling player has to go left and her run is matched by Grace who stays goal-side of the threat and, because of her orientation (no pun), she avoids being left behind in the race.

The attacker has now been pushed out wide and no longer has an opportunity for a shot on goal and must be satisfied with putting in a cross at best. No 2 Chloe Gormley has moved to the near post to be the first person to cut off any cross which may come in low.

Chloe Gormley (grey strip) is at the rear of the formation, she's just taken possession but is under big pressure by the high-pressing Welling striker

You'd expect Chloe (or anyone else) to hoof it clear but, despite the pressure, she finds team-mate Jessica Parr with a neat pass. Cool, confident and comfortable in possession.

Chloe then get's herself back goal-side of the attacker and is already half-turned in case a rear-ward run may be required should a channel ball come in.

Welling's coach says...

Stephen Young, Welling Utd's coach gave a video interview after their 3:0 home defeat to the Os last Sunday. Bravo to him for doing it - despite hinting our 3rd goal was offside. . He recognised they didn't deal with the threat from Sion Kamiende until it was too late. Enjoy...
