League Cup Final
Tooting Bec 1:4 Leyton Orient

Sorry for the delay in getting this to you, we're on something of a learning curve with our video production and things didn't go as smoothly in the editing room as I'd hoped. All is good now so we're proud to bring you some footage of the season's final match as shot from the touchline by our own Ben James of the 4:1 League Cup final victory over Tooting Bec on 17th May. It's on YouTube so it is available to everyone, no sign-in required.

Now the off-season is here...

Following what has been the best possible season imaginable, several months in which we at LOFCwomen.com further developed our support of the women's group. We were ever-present at a time when 28 games were played (and 27 wins recorded) during which we ended up offering update content three days per week, a full live-text service on match days, much improved match preview and reporting, written and photographic by the addition of Ben and Gizmo to the team, plus spreading the word via the social media platforms..... we reckon it's time for a breather.

However, we do plan to provide fairly regular news updates during the closed season in order keep everyone up to speed with the comings and goings, rumours, wider league news and anything else of interest. So... keep us in your favourites/bookmarks bar, and please contribute any views, questions or news you may have. Our basic statistical data (very basic) tells us we have about 1,000 regular viewers/readers across the various portals we use. Please join in the fun and help us grow the fan-base for our women's team.

GLWFL Premier Division round-up

By now, we thought we'd be posting the final league standings, but no!
All the key positions are settled but the FA's website still shows us and South London with one game outstanding plus both AFC Croydon and AFC Leyton with two games yet to play. Strangely, our outstanding game is versus AFC Leyton which was timetabled for 10th May but Leyton "withdrew". Despite that, the league have published that game as "postponed". That seems wrong, unless there are some dire circumstances to take into consideration, then that is a straight-forward rule breaker! It happens a fair bit in cup competitions where the win is awarded to the club who were prepared to play so they merely move on to the next round. However, doing that in a league match affects other teams, certainly in terms of goal-difference. It wouldn't make material difference to this season's Premier Division but it could've done.

In any other "normal" season - one where a team doesn't suddenly arrive in Tier 7 with a team of Tier 3/4 standard players, Tooting Bec would have finished as league champions. Indeed, our view is that Bec were the toughest competition we faced all season - every bit as good as Hammersmith who ended up winning their league at Tier 6. In a sense, this Leyton Orient side playing in Tier 7 arguably ruined it as a viable competition, neither the opponents nor our people wanted it but the powers-that-be in the FA stuck to their rules despite the entreaties of everyone at Brisbane Road. The FA are also the people who blocked the club's move to the Essex League structure despite both Essex and the GLWFL having agreed to it. That caused a situation where Orient had to go grovelling to the individual clubs to vote in favour of us returning to the GLWFL - the vote was far from unanimous! Where does all this leave Tooting Bec?
Let's hope, whatever is decided for next season, the FA committee concerned make pragmatic decisions aimed at saving the women's middle order game from missing out on the upward progress it deserves.

Just for completeness, this is the current state of play in the GLWFL Premier Division - the same as it was two weeks ago.

U18s moving up?

Time being a linear function means a number of the current Under-18 girls' squad will be outside of the age limit once the new season starts. We have very little info about who will be affected but, in view of the first team standards (if nothing changes in the meantime), youth players looking to step up from the Under-18s is going to be a big ask. However, with our current info, three names must be in with a shout....

Edie Miller played a handful of games in mid-season when the opportunities arose due to regular first teamers being injured or unavailable. A massive jump for any youngster but Edie held her own and didn't look out of place.

Isobel Irvine played mostly in the same mid-season matches as did Edie and similarly acquitted herself well among some frighteningly good team-mates. Coach Stephens commented that exposure was perhaps a little too early for these two youngsters so he arranged the recruitment of more experience in the form of Maddie Biggs, Abbi Smith and Bria Abbiata to bolster the squad. However, Edie and Isobel may have given themselves a shot at getting more first team football in the new season.

Perhaps the player with the biggest claim is U18 keeper Lottie Behan. Pictured here proudly showing off her recent driving test pass, Lottie already has numerous first team games to her credit having covered the keeper's job during the 2024/25 season when dozens (it felt like that) of senior keepers disappeared from the club. Lottie stood in at the age of 16 and shocked everyone at her agility, confidence and bravery - she certainly got hit a few times going down where the boots were flying. If we don't lose her to another club - or more likely - to a talent hungry American college, Lottie will have her sights set on Lola's position. We'll keep an eye on this case.

We'll be back with more soon.
