A fitting end to the season with a cup final (the John Greenacre memorial Trophy) against long-time South London rivals Tooting Bec. Orient have won the Capital Women’s Cup and the Premier Division of the Greater London Women’s Football League and are bidding for a hat-trick of silverware this season. The Bec have been our dogged pursuers all season, having lost only once to a team other than Orient in the league. They should get a deserved promotion.
Will we get the third?
tewo of three trophies won, one more to go
This is a bit Groundhog Day, as the teams played each other two weeks ago in the league. There isn’t anything new to say. They are led from the front, as ever, by their top goal scorer the very competitive Bryony Bancroft (13 in 17 games). It’s by no means a one woman show as Lucy Hearn and Jayny Saunders have chipped in seven, with three others just behind just behind on six. Their defence is solid. Sian Bradley was red carded in the league game for her impression of a goalkeeper and seems to be suspended.

Orient will be choosing from their normal group of players. Captain Grace Gillard will lead, although whether that is from the front or the back is to be decided. Hayley West has been a, very mobile, rock in defence and I hope that she will be available. Behind them is the athletic Lola Durojaiye. Newly-wed Flo Donnelly (was Gamby) has been very good as well and Olivia MacGregor has featured well at fullback recently. The ever-reliable Esme Lancaster will be in place. In midfield Poppy Binding will be pulling the strings with Georgia Griffin with Maddie Biggs up front and probably the tireless Wiki Fronc on the wing. I hope that we also see Lucy Porter, Abbi Smith and Macie Windsor and, of course, Steph McCaffrey. Maybe we will have a bigger bench than usual for this game.

Where will Grace Gillard play?
Congrats to newlywed Flo Donnelly.

This match is a fitting end to the season for Orient with silverware on the line and against a fierce rival. Recent results suggest that Orient will win handily and I’m sure that the team will want to sign off in style. Have we as fans enjoyed this season? Damn right we have!

GLWFL Premier Division round-up

The final positions in the Premier Division of the Greater London Womens football league have been all been settled with the exception of AFC Croydon having the chance to secure 4th spot at the expense of Luton Town Dev. We have one match as yet un-played but opponents AFC Leyton withdrew from the game so the league management committee will need to decide what they do about that. In the meantime, we are shown as having played 17 of the 18 games but we expect that to change without a ball being kicked.

Georgia Griffin says...

GEORGIA GRIFFIN'S first full Orient campaign could yet end in a glorious treble as the ladies have already won the regional ‘Capital Cup’ and have now added the Greater London Women’s premier league title (without dropping a single point) leaving just the Greater London League Cup final which will be played this Sunday 17th May.
Having won the first two silverware trophies, the forward is buzzing to land more. She tells us...

Georgia Griffin
Example

“We'll wait until the end of the season to celebrate properly, we have a last match now... then we can put it all to bed, we just want to get the job done now. Everything negative we hear said about us just fuels us, as Jason says, we'll just let our football do the talking. We know we are good players and it has been a good first season at Leyton Orient.
It’s been nice to play at Brisbane Road, I've also been able to get my confidence and momentum back after injury by scoring goals. You do think if you’ll ever be the same player again, I’m grateful for the opportunity here.“

It was GG’s second-half double which secured the Capital Cup final a couple of weeks ago. Hammersmith - who were top of a higher division than Tier 7 Orient - were overcome 4-0 in the end but it remains one of the trickier matches Orient have had to endure in a year full of wins. Griffin explained her and her team-mates were grateful for the chance to be extended by a good side. Georgia added:

"It was actually a lot tougher than I'd expected. It was definitely good to come up against opposition who may be at Tier 5 next season and it was great to play a more competitive match and work a bit harder. It was unbelievable at the end - we were only 2-0 up at half-time so we had to dig deep to earn the win in the second half. It was such a hot day and we had to graft. It was the first trophy in the bag for us (The Premier league title was won the following Sunday) but now we want to make it three by the end of the season."

Georgia has recently formed a lethal partnership with skipper Grace Gillard, who is usually deployed further back in the team, but for Griffin, it is a return to what she does best - scoring goals....

"Playing up front is my natural position and it's been nice to play with Grace, even though she normally plays at centre-back. She leads really well and she started really well up top against Hammersmith but later a tactical decision was made to move her back but it's all come flooding back for me! We've found some form, and so have I. You never grow out of that buzz you get from scoring goals. I'm just now excited to see where this goalscoring run can take me in the games we've left."

It's been a season of change for the club, who have lost a number of players to injury during the course of the campaign, but with League honours now in the bag and the JGMT Trophy final against none other than Tooting Bec on May 17 at Bedfont Sports, Georgia was complimentary about her new team-mates' efforts. She continued...

"We've had a bit of change. Poppy Binding was scoring a lot of goals but she is also very versatile and has been playing deeper lately, Sammy Rowland also scored a lot of goals but she's been injured for much of the season so now Maddie Biggs has come in up front, I've always been an attacking player. We've had a few new additions so the team has changed a bit over the course of the season, Jason likes to bring in new players, the girls who have come in have settled nicely and adapted well to the way we play."
