Gizmo's Preview
Leyton Orient -v- Islington Borough
Greater London WFL - Premier division – 4/1/2026

The Greater London Women’s League re-convenes after a short Christmas break and I hope everyone has digested their turkey, turkey curry and turkey hash (vegetarian alternatives are available), as well as recovering from their New Year’s celebrations. Just to wake the players up, the weather has turned cold. This Sunday Leyton Orient are matched against Islington Borough. Unfortunately for Islington, things have not gone well this season, not helped by most of last year’s team moving clubs. They sit bottom of the division, having only got results against the team just above them, AFC Leyton. Scoring goals has been a struggle with all of them shared between three players: Romy Fernandez Reumann (can swear in English, German and Spanish), Rudi Wilmshurst and Andrea Chan – four, four and three respectively. Jennika Kelly has been an ever present doing a difficult job as goalkeeper, while also doing some coaching. The Orient machine continues its inexorable march in the league, having beaten London Academicals 16-0 before Christmas. In the absence of Sammy Rowland, Poppy Binding has been unstoppable, closely followed by Wiktoria Kiszkis. One issue of concern is the number of substitutes available as only Ruby Abela was on the bench in the last game. That may just have been a pre-Christmas blip, and we will now see some of the girls return. This looks set to be a very one-sided game with Orient strengthening their position at the top of the table. Last result:
Islington Borough 0:14 Leyton Orient

Taking the table positions and recent results/trends into account, here are this week's predictions of the likely outcomes... ➡️ South London VS Sporting Duet
Duet are sitting in a creditable fourth spot in the table but they have played more games than anyone else. South London, our tip for the top (or close to it) at the start of the season are quietly getting stronger as the weeks go by and have a point more than Duet despite having played three games less. A home win for the south Londoners will go some way to establishing the league as a three-way battle between them, Tooting Bec and ourselves. We predict they will do just that.
Our Verdict: A cruising win for South London. ➡️ Luton Town VS London Academicals
Standing in the positions just above the two relegation spots, this match up looks close and very important to both clubs. The winner will move further away from the threat of the drop as a minimum, the loser will spend the rest of the season looking over their shoulders. Both teams have blown hot and cold so it really depends on who will have a full strength team and the greater will on the day.
Our Verdict: Luton to squeeze past the Accies with a tight win. ➡️ Tooting Bec VS Comets WFC
Comets are not that far away from the drop zone themselves, indeed, if Luton or the Accies win whilst Comets lose to Bec, it will be the ever popular Comets team who will be getting perilously close to the trapdoor.
Our Verdict: Tooting Bec to prove too strong for a mis-firing Comets and maintain their relentless battle for promotion. ➡️ AFC Leyton VS AFC Croydon
Leyton and Islington really have to start picking up points soon if they are going to threaten the teams above them. It's hard to see Islington getting anything at Orient and almost as difficult to see AFC Leyton having enough to get past Croydon despite the odd stellar performance. They beat Duet 4:0 and lost a close 2:1 battle to Tooting Bec in recent weeks but then, just when you think they've found something....
Our Verdict: A regulation three points for Croydon.

All Orient's results, league and cups, can be seen HERE . At the time of writing, the latest addition to the fixtures list was the game booked for 18/1/2026, an away Capital Cup game at league rivals Tooting Bec.

Meanwhile...

In the meantime, please accept our thanks if you have been following us as we try to post up all the relevant news about the Women's team at Orient. It's been a strange year and one we'll (nearly) all look back on with some warmth as we tell of the season where Leyton Orient completely dominated everyone in the league. These kinds of stories tend to be once-in-a-lifetime things so let's enjoy the new year as our girls look like continuing a historic season. After all, there are plenty of opportunities to see the other side of the coin as Islington's first team left to play for Fusion WFC in Tier 9 where they have won every game so far (sound familiar?) and even Hashtag Utd who are battling hard to keep their Tier 3 status having lost the bulk of their side to us. It's unusual to see Leyton Orient being anything other than the victims of developments elsewhere in the football world.

Ups and downs...

Apart from any vacancies arising higher up the women's football hierarchy, and there usually is one or two, The GLWFL operates a system where the top team is promoted up to Tier 6 into the London & South East Regional Women's Football League (LSEWFL) Division One - North. Last season saw both Hammersmith and Camden Town do that, the season before saw Richmond and Kew make the jump. Interestingly, Hammersmith remain unbeaten all season and Camden Town have lost just once all season. That would indicate that Tier 6 is not that much different in quality from where we are in Tier 7. The GLWFL then receives the relegated club from Tier 6, the two bottom clubs are replaced by the winners of the GLWFL Division One leagues (there are two, one 'North' and the other 'South'). The point of all this is to show there is a very high chance that the runners-up in GLWFL, maybe even 3rd place, will still gain promotion. Hence the likes Of Tooting Bec and South London are extremely keen to do well even if they cannot get above Leyton Orient. There's still a lot to play for - at both ends of the league.
