Match Preview: Hutton vs Leyton Orient

This coming Sunday sees the Leyton Orient women's first team travel away to Hutton FC for a 3rd qualifying round of the 2024 Women's FA Cup. Having been given a bye in the first round when opponents Cheshunt withdrew, that was followed by a somewhat one-sided 2nd round match against Oaklands Wolves. Now the O's ladies once again meet opposition from outside of our home league, Hutton WFC's first team play in the Eastern Region Women's Football League - Division 1 south, which has a Tier six status, one above the Orient girls.
Before we get into the detail of our preview, here's a YouTube video of Hutton playing a league game a couple of weeks ago, it was against Chelmsford City who currently sit at mid table so it should give a good idea as to the ability level we'll face on Sunday. Look out for No 14, Daisy Canny. joint top scorer, person-of-the-match and fast!!!

How tough will this match be?

This is something of a hobby horse for us here at lofcwomen.com.... We hold the opinion that our league, The Greater London Women's Premier, at tier 7, is an order of magnitude more demanding than the surrounding leagues which are equal or higher in status. We've already lost our first two league games, these were against strong, skilful, fit and well organised footballing sides. Our match on Sunday against Tier 6 Hutton will demonstrate whether or not our opinion is correct. No pressure then!
Hutton are in 3rd place in their league, indeed they have dropped fewer points than their opponents and have games in hand. If they win those matches, they will be clear at the top. These are no strugglers, they look like being the best their league has to offer. By way of research, it isn't just Daisy Canny who will provide a threat, she is joint (or close) top scorer with team-mate Lucy Critchell, these two have score 13 goals between them.
Hutton's current league stats are: Played 5, Won 4, Drawn 0, Lost 1, For 21, against 9, Pts 12.
That's a scoring rate of over four per league game although they concede just under two per match.
We played a Hutton team during pre-season on 11th August, it was probably a mix of their first team and their reserves (who play at tier 7). We ran out eventual winners by 6:4 but were 3:0 down in the first half, Liliana Almeida was among the scorers. Otherwise, in league and cup games, Hutton have won them all barring an away 4:2 defeat at table topping Southend Utd, so they will not be short of confidence.

Absentees

Playing for Leyton Orient, a club with over 140 years of history, comes a level of expectations associated with the name - the 'brand' if you will. Perhaps it's worth remembering that the women's team are amateur players. They have jobs, families and, like the rest of us, they have obligations and a life outside of football. It shouldn't surprise anyone that life sometimes gets in the way and football, even Leyton Orient, has to take a backward step. Last Sunday we were without Hannah Stone, Leanne Bates, Tayla Gencarelli, Sion Kamiende and Thara 'Tee' Said. All of whom are regular first team picks. Of course, squad strength is vital as is a strong bench filled with cover and possible game changers. We are not in the loop with respect to who is or is not available, like you, we have to wait for the team sheet on game day. The point here is that people have lives and sometimes, playing amateur football has to take second fiddle.

Sterling Technology add their support to the Women.

Philip Whitchelo, Chief Strategy & Marketing Officer at Sterling Technology added: "The newly promoted Orient Women have had an outstanding first season in the Greater London Premier Division, finishing in third place on equal points and just missing out on the second place spot due to goal difference. This season, we wanted to focus our support for the continued development of the women’s team at Leyton Orient through sponsorship and continued partnership with the club. The English women’s game across all levels is rightly experiencing tremendous growth and offers increasing opportunities for young girls to develop their potential. The Orient Women have some very talented players, and the team undoubtedly has the ability to rise higher in the pyramid. There are some exciting developments planned for women’s football at Orient this season and we are delighted and looking forward to being a part of that. Up the O’s!”
We at lofcwomen.com wish to join the club in wholeheartedly thanking Philip and Sterling Technology for their support.
